My daughter but started her menstruation recently. She is freaking out nigh competing gymnastics if she has her period! When you compete, it's against the rules to have whatsoever kind of shorts on. You just become your leotard and that'due south it!

She is only xi and is afraid of tampons, fifty-fifty the small ones. I don't desire to push her if she'southward scared.

Anyone know of a skilful make of pad that won't show or will make her experience more comfy? I assured her that she can clothing underwear that matches the leotard underneath and that she can clothing her warmup pants or shorts until correct before she has to compete. I assured her that no one will be able to see.

I've been using the Diva Cup for years then I don't know anything about pads anymore.

Suggestons welcome!

And then What Happened?

I know girls don't QUIT gymnastics because of their periods or else our squad would be empty and and so would the junior high and high schoolhouse teams. I don't know anyone who has ever quit gymnastics considering of their period and I was a competitive gymnast and I've been coaching gymnastics for 23 years.

I only never asked any of my girls what they do or habiliment lest THAT mortify them and they die of embarrassment!

Thanks for the advice, I will take her exercise with very small tampons. I know they don't hurt when they are in, information technology's but a piddling scary.

I did compete gymnastics with pads considering my mom was 1 of those who thought you couldn't apply them if yous were a virgin. In fact, when I did outset using tampons in college, she got very upset when she institute out and I had to elevate out my teen magazines to show her that you could use them as a virgin!! I never had any leaks with pads during a gymnastics meet, but I cant find the type that I used because times take changed and so much. I was hoping they improved fifty-fifty more! I recall running to the bathroom before each event and checking and changing.

Hopefully my daughter volition exist open to tampons. Cheers for the input!

I don't understand how girls exercise gymnastics with a menses. I did gymnastics up to age 10. There was no manner I would have been able to go along...I couldn't use a tampon until college and it was AWFUL trying to become it to work the first few times. Plus they leak! A tampon won't piece of work 100%. I would take died of embarrassment.

In fact, had the rails team at my high school non had shorts just the leotard type, I would have quit. The whole issue caused SOOO much feet in me as a young teen.

Nope.

In gymnastics... not merely will the pad evidence... but it Volition (due to the bear upon nature of the sport) leak onto the floor, beam, or vault.

Yes.

Anybody will be able to come across.

I'm very, very sad... but I competed in gymnastics, and this is a huge matter that will follow her for a LONG time. Both on her squad, and on other teams. Especially if she gets claret on the beam/ floor/ vault... which then the whole competition grinds to a halt as people come out and steam clean and sanitize the area.

Girls QUIT gymnastics because of becoming laughingstocks.

I'm out of the competetive earth, but my son is in the rec world. It's however a huge, big, major thing.

WITH tampons... make sure she pokes the string inside, besides (to be fishe out subsequently), because while it's not every bit large a deal every bit a bloody pad falling out, or claret squishing out... when the cord shows? Expect months of beingness made fun of.

Don't laugh, but I just went on youtube.com and searched for tampon employ for beginners and constitute the following link - "tampon preparation camp - how to insert a tampon". Information technology is demonstrated past young teen girls like an instruction video. There are some medical designs where they evidence the internal structure. Information technology was Actually well done and very straightforward.

I would say to educate her a little more about tampons...

I was terrified to use 1 until I had no pick merely to use one. (was out hiking, started ii weeks earlier than usual, and the only item available was a tampon my friend was conveying...)

Later on I used a tampon for the first time, I was Done with pads!!! I discover them uncomfortable and disgusting.

Buy her a box of light tampons, (I liked the pearl ones when I was younger...) and permit her experiment with them a bit. Have i out of the applicator, and get it clammy so she tin can encounter how it will expand in her torso. (although, explicate that it won't swell up NEARLY equally much as it does in h2o! lol.)

This is a proficient link for her to check out.

I don't retrieve there is much of a fashion to become around using a tampon for gymnastics... Even during gym class in loftier school, I had huge bug with leaking any time I was using a pad. I tin can't imagine what information technology would be like with the much more intense gymnastics competition!

Calm her downward about her fears of tampons.

There is really nothing else out there, that will requite her the proper protection and not show.. Even the thinnest pads will show.. or could slip..

Piece of work with her even when she is non on her menstruum, to detect the tampon she does feel comfortable using.

The Tampax visitor will even send her a sample pack for her to piece of work with..

Our daughter was pretty young when she started.. after the start month, she told me she was "done with pads" and "wanted to acquire how to use the tampons".. I stood outside of the bathroom door and gave her very explicit and detailed instructions.. She caught on really fast and has not had any bug..

funny thing, in College. there were lots of young women at that place that they were never taught about how to use tampons.. so our daughter was the person they turned to for assist. And so she would stand outside of the stalls and give them the same instructions i had given her..

She said many of them had been told by their mothers.. "Only a married woman tin use a tampon!" Amazing..

Why don't you lot simply take her use a Diva Loving cup? I mean, yes, there'due south a learning bend, but it's by far improve than a pad or tampon. My daughter is very serious almost ballet, and although she hasn't started her period all the same, she had me purchase her a Diva (well, we bought a different brand that is a bit smaller, and came in a royal color instead of only the clear ;).

The reason my daughter is fifty-fifty thinking of this is that she has a friend in her ballet class who had her period during their Summertime Intensive plan (when they're dancing viii+ hours per day), and for whatever reason was wearing pads instead of a tampon or diva loving cup. Anyway, this poor daughter had a terrible leak that ran all the way downward her pink tights to her shoes, and she had to run out of the class (that a male teacher was teaching, eeek!), and change her entire outfit. Let's just say that that feel seems to have scarred that poor girl for life, and she at present wears tampons.

Perhaps you could explore with your girl the reasons she'southward afraid of tampons or a diva cup, and ask how she feels about a pad inevitably leaking (gymnastics requires as much movement as ballet, if not more!), and what she would do, how she would feel if that happened. Frankly, every bit a mom, I'd simply exercise what I could to salvage her from that embarrassment up front. Simply my ii cents!

The easiest I found to use are OB. They don't take an applicator so you can get them where they belong.
The first time I used a tampon was a family unit go together. I went to change into my swim suit and "surprise". A relative gave me i so I could swim while my apparel were done and dryed and I did not miss out while everyone else swam. I had no real instructions but information technology was pretty straight forward. I have gotten ones with applicators when I needed to bum one in a pinch and I end up taking it out of the applicator and inserting it like the OBs. Those applicators are daunting and brand it await so much bigger than it is.

The tampax website recommends the Tampax Pearl Lites for first fourth dimension users. And the U by Kotex Teen are also slender and smooth.

I use Kotex Ultra Thin pads and they are pretty good about not showing, but the closest matter I wearable to the tightness of a leotard is yoga pants. Peradventure you lot could ask some of the older girls or one of the female coaches if they accept whatsoever suggestions.

Wow, what a tough situation! I would get her Kotex pads with wings and then that she has that added protection. I don't think anyone would be able to encounter anything. If they do, they shouldn't be--they are looking too hard! Best wishes---Maybe yous could telephone call the coach and ask them what they suggest?

I didn't read the replies, but what about reusable pads (if even for JUST during gymnastics?)

They are cloth, more comfortable than the disposables, and the colors could closely coordinate or match the leotard. They're also a bit more tapered, and then the outline would not be as likely to show.

I'm thinking something like this, but if y'all're handy with a sewing machine, you could make your own too.

I worry most this as well! My daughter is 13, also a competitive gymnast and hasn't started even so (I didn't get-go until 14 and they say information technology's fairly genetic.)
I DO plan to testify her how to utilize the petty tampons. If she's not comfortable with that I programme to go to the coaches. They have been and then crawly with everything else I'm certain they'll accept great advice there, too :)
Adept luck, Delight let us know how it goes!

I recently picked upwardly a pack of pads for the first fourth dimension in years and Man accept they changed!

I'd Notwithstanding recommend helping her become past her fearfulness of tampons (peradventure only get a box of super slim ones and leave it in the bath for her to Attempt inserting when SHE feels like information technology).

That being said, I'd remember, for this particular result, a pad WITHOUT wings is best, but might be difficult to find. Ever Infinity is And so thin and has the texture of moisture wicking sportswear (think UnderArmor meets maxi-pad).

I'd too recommend that she caput to the restroom simply before she competes, make clean herself, change her pad, and bank check that everything is in information technology's place so she isn't stressed about what it will look like when she pulls off her warm-up pants.

Really? If leotards are the way they used to exist, there is no style a pad won't bear witness. I was a competitive gymnast, and wouldn't have dreamed of wearing a pad under a leotard.

I nonetheless remember learning how to put in a tampon, and it was definitely difficult at first. But I think your daughter needs to know, before she decides that she's too afraid to try a tampon, that her pad is probably going to prove. Attempt it on with the leotard and allow her meet. If she wants to compete during her menstruation, she just might want to start learning how to put a tampon in.

Never heard of the Diva cup that Catherine mentioned, just that might be worth a effort.
